After Earth

Humans have once again trashed the planet and were forced to flee. And like we have done since the beginning of civilization, we settled somewhere that was already occupied. Of course this lead to war and the creation of scary monsters…blind scary monsters that can smell fear. So, introduce stoic military officer who is really good at ghosting…choosing not to feel fear in the face of blind scary monsters and thus becoming invisible to said monsters. Being able to turn off his emotions is a great trick on the battlefield but makes family life tough. So he decides to take his troubled teen on his next mission which gets interrupted by a cosmic storm or something. And so we end up on the quarantined planet Earth watching the injured Will Smith talk Jaden Smith through an intense merrit badge test.

Will Smith. Jaden Smith. What an amazing father-son team to have emerged from Fresh Prince. I was incredibly impressed with Jaden’s performance; the range of emotion from fear to anger to determination that he can express with just his eyes is astonishing.

I will admit that the accents were kind of weird at first but I got used to that pretty quickly. I really appreciated their take on technology and amenities in our future; everything is more organic, more fluid to natural behavior and it was rather refreshing after decades sterile metalic sci-fi environments (not that there is anything wrong with those).

This was a great coming of age, healing family rifts, make you want to go work out movie for cross-generations.

4 out of 4 thumbs up.
